# createInMemoryHub \[The socket-keyed pub/sub backbone]

The hub is the pub/sub backbone: it maps **connections** to subscriptions, and forwards
`ServerMessage` objects from `sync.create` / `update` / `delete` to whichever sockets are
subscribed to the affected topic. Subscription state lives and dies with the socket.

`createInMemoryHub` is a single-process, in-memory implementation suitable for development and
single-node deployments. It takes no configuration (an optional `{ now }` clock is injectable for
deterministic tests).

**Wiring:**

* Register a delivery sink with `hub.onPublish(sink)` — [`createWsServer`](/framework/ws/server)
  does this internally to route `patch` / `stale` messages to the right socket by connection id.
* Subscriptions are written **by the WS layer** from verified `subscribe` frames:
  `createWsServer` verifies the [grant](/framework/server/grants) a client presents, then calls
  `hub.subscribe(conn, [channel, ...entities], exp)` with the grant's expiry. `publish` skips
  entries past their `exp` (lazy prune); re-subscribing with a fresh grant extends `exp` in place.
* `drop` runs when a socket closes — it forgets every subscription that connection held. There is
  no unbound subscription and no TTL to configure: an unsubscribed topic cannot exist because
  subscribing requires a sync socket, and a closed socket's state is dropped immediately. The
  client owns durability by replaying its grant set on reconnect.
